Vehicles of Hollywood and Cars of the Rich and Famous
"Cars of the Stars"
On view March 1st through March 31st, 2012
Sacramento, CA-This Saturday March 3, the California Automobile Museum will be opening "Cars of the
Stars," an exhibition displaying famous vehicles from Hollywood movies, television and cars owned by notable individuals. One car in particular, a 1949 black Mercury Coupe, is well known for its role in Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean. The Mercury along with five other famous vehicles, including Eric Estrada's motorcycle from the filming of CHIPS, will be on display March 3, 2012 through March 31, 2012. The California Automobile Museum is open 10:00am to 6:00pm seven days a week.
The James Dean car has been on loan since the fall of 2011 from the National Automobile Museum in Reno, Nevada. Last summer the two museums each wagered a car on the outcome of a series of games between the Sacramento River Cats and the Reno Aces. After sixteen games spanning several tense weeks, the River Cats prevailed, winning the James Dean car for the California Automobile Museum. For now the vehicle will reside in our "Cars of the Stars" exhibit, but it could very well be gone by tomorrow- hurry in while it's still here!
We welcome all ages and communities to tour our Museum; free tours are available from our docent staff. This is a great exhibit for kids, adults, and film buffs and fanatics. Come one, come all and visit some Hollywood history at the California Automobile Museum.
Exhibit Spotlights Germany's Premier Cars
WUNDERCARS! Exhibit turns focus to BMW
Exhibit runs from October 1st through May 11, 2012
BMW is stepping into the spotlight in the California Automobile Museum's ongoing WUNDERCARS! exhibit on November 28, 2011. WUNDERCARS!, which opened on October 1, highlights the long and dynamic history of the German automobile. In addition to a long-term exhibit tracing the impact of the American market on the German automotive industry - and the impact of the German automobile on America - a rotating gallery is spotlighting the histories of four of Germany's premier automakers, beginning with Porsche and continuing with BMW from November 28 to January 21, 2012.
The Bayerische Motoren Werke (Bavarian Motor Works), better known as BMW, came into being as an aircraft design and construction firm in 1917, and branched out into motorcycles and automobiles in the 1920s after being barred from the aviation field after the First World War. The company's history has been distinguished by a series of unlikely comebacks: rising to the top of the racing world after being denied crucial government funding; returning to automobile production in the 1950s after being left for dead in the destruction and division of Germany in the Second World War; barely avoiding bankruptcy in the late 1950s with a line of eccentric microcars and expensive luxury machines; and becoming the unlikely darling of American enthusiast drivers in the late 1960s with the shoebox-shaped 2002 sports sedan. WUNDERCARS! will guide visitors through every twist and turn with a selection of historically significant BMW cars and motorcycles.
The California Automobile Museum is located at 2200 Front Street, Sacramento and is open daily 10:00am - 6:00pm taking in the last guest at 5:00pm. The Museum is open every third Thursday of the month and will be closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.
